IITA PROSSIVA-Yam project Launch Farmers Association at Irepodun, Jarija Branch, Akinyele Local Government Area (LGA), Oyo State.

 

IITA PROSSIVA project, a key player in promoting seed delivery to rural communities, recently launch, Irepodun Farmers’ Association, Jarija Branch, within the Akinyele Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo State on November 23, 2023.

 

This event marked an essential step in PROSSIVA’s mission to establish seed hubs in various communities and integrate informal seed actors into formal systems. The focus was on creating registered groups and cooperatives to bolster rural seed distribution.

 

Representatives from the Irepodun Farmers’ Association, including Mr. Seyi Oyelade, the Chairman of Eni-Osa Community in Lagelu LGA, attended the inauguration alongside nearly all the members from the Jarija Community Branch. Notably, the Eni-Osa Branch, a longstanding partner of PROSSIVA, provided crucial technical assistance in establishing and registering the Jarija Branch.

Dr. Idris Olabode Badiru, PROSSIVA’s Extension Specialist, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the significance of Farmers’ Cooperatives. His address emphasized the core values and principles of cooperatives, advocating for their adoption among the association members. He highlighted the benefits of cooperatives, including their role in enabling economies of scale, facilitating access to various government and development partner benefits, and providing avenues for training and capacity building.


During the event, Dr. Badiru introduced the concept of community seed entrepreneurship, offering this opportunity to association members and participants.


Mr. Seyi Oyelade, Chairman of the Irepodun Farmers’ Association Eniosa, Lagelu LGA, introduced and inaugurated the recently elected executive council of the Jarija branch during the event, 13 people, mostly middle-aged and older, make up the association’s membership.


It has officially registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and plans to grow over time. A pivotal moment occurred as the certificate of registration and other essential documents were handed over to the executives, followed by the new Chairman’s acceptance speech.


Overall, the event showcased PROSSIVA-Yam’s commitment to grassroots engagement, promoting cooperative principles, and empowering rural communities in Oyo State’s agricultural landscape.
